Taggart je prototypem zkušeného praktika, který se vypracoval od píky a volí přímočaré a drsné metody vyšetřování. To mladší Livingstone, který teprve nedávno opustil univerzitu, je ve svých úsudcích opatrnější a raději spoléhá na bohaté teoretické vědomosti. Když je zjištěna totožnost mrtvé dívky, soustředí se Taggart na jejího milého Billyho, který se v den zločinu s dívkou pohádal.
