Detektiv Murdoch a inspektor Brackenreid jsou služebně na palubě lodi Keewatin. Majitel Clarence MacFarlane se na základě anonymně zaslaného pohledu cítí v ohrožení. Jde o zcela první vyplutí Keewatin, která směřuje z Toronta do Rochesteru. Poté, co Murdoch mezi pozvanými hosty nalezne jméno své přítelkyně, je přesvědčen, že by policie měla zůstat na palubě. Přítomnost policie se brzy ukazuje velmi užitečná. MacFarlanova dcera Amy, která je zasnoubená s otcovým finančním ředitelem Owenem Mathersem, spadne přes palubu a není nikde k nalezení.
