Detektiv Murdoch vyšetřuje smrt Petera Farrellyho. Než bylo jeho tělo nalezeno, měl s někým v noci hlasitou hádku. Dr. Graceová potvrdí, že ho někdo ubil k smrti. Zároveň v jeho těle najde chloralhydrát, stejnou látku obsahuje i láhev v zavazadle oběti. Dr. Graceová je přesvědčena, že oběť a jeho vrah pochází ze stejného místa Kanady. Murdoch a Crabtree vyrazí do městečka St. John v naději, že vrahem je Ezekiel Farrelly. Právě zde Crabtree vyrůstal a má tu několik tet, které mají zajímavé povolání.
