Chybějící bota na mrtvém těle newyorského bezdomovce vede Jessicu k domněnce, že údajně náhodná smrt nebyla náhodou.Jessica Fletcherová v New Yorku na setkání vydavatelů narazí na svého starého přítele, newyorského policejního detektiva poručíka Timothy Hanrattyho. Ten má pořád pro Jessicu slabost, což se ale nedá říct o jeho novém šéfovi kapitánu Everettu Larsonovi. Tima zaujme smrt Elliota Winstona, který byl nalezen mrtvý v jedné z městských uliček ve smetí. Zvláštní ale je, že měl na sobě pouze jednu botu. Tim i Jessica jsou vůči závěrům policie skeptičtí, nicméně kapitán má za to, že jen ztrácejí čas. Lékař označil za příčinu smrti nadměrnou konzumaci alkoholu, avšak Elliotova sousedka Grace Fentonová tvrdí, že byl vyléčeným alkoholikem a neměl již roky ani kapku. Elliot pracoval jako účetní na prestižní lékařské klinice, kam také vede Jessičino pátrání. Rozhodne se tedy vydávat za bohatou hypochondrickou dámu, aby zjistila, co se tam děje.(Radek273)
